The Department of Emergency Management noted today that evacuation shelters are meant for people who reside in the coastal evacuation zones, in older homes built before 1995 not built to current hurricane standards, in homes on exposed ridgelines or in an area prone to flooding. People with nowhere else to go and who cannot shelter in place in their homes or in a windowless room of a building on the lower floors should also evacuate to a shelter. Remember to bring disaster supplies with you.
Shelters will be open on Thursday, August 7 at 10 p.m. At this time, buses with an "EVACUATION" sign will also start offering free transportation to the nearest shelter. People are allowed one bag and pets that are leashed or in a pet crate/carrier. You must have supplies to take care of your pets, and carriers must be big enough for them to turn around in.
Weapons, illicit drugs, alcohol and smoking are not permitted in shelters.
